“Amber, this is Dr. Smith’s office...
It appears you may have cervical cancer...
We know you’re pregnant...”
You’re never really ready to receive life altering news, but there are certainly better times and better places for it to come in.
This time and place in my life was not one of the better times or places…and it sucked.
I worked at a highly oppressive insurance company where every minute you spent in their dungeon was micromanaged.
How micromanaged? I could only use the bathroom during my ten minute breaks, which happened twice during the workday, or over my thirty minute lunch - no exceptions. And we certainly couldn’t take time for personal phone calls at any point.
That’s why I was caught off guard when I heard my boss growl at me from his desk
“Amber, you have a phone call.”
The first thought that popped into my head was who could have been calling me on his line?
Dread immediately set in as I walked over to his desk. He sat, glaring at me as I picked up the phone.
“Hello, this is Amber,” I answered as I turned away attempting to get some type of privacy.
“Amber, this is Dr. Smith’s office. I’m sorry to call you at work but there are some unusual results with your labs. It appears you may have cervical cancer. We know you’re pregnant, so we need to get you in as soon as possible to run some further tests and create a plan.”
At the time of this call I was 21 years old and a newlywed who had just learned that I was pregnant a week earlier.
I was already scared out of my mind about being a wife, let alone about being pregnant - and now I’m being told over the phone that I have cancer!?! Seriously!
“Hello? Amber, are you still there?”
No, I wasn’t really. I looked over at my boss who was still glaring at me for being on the phone.
Tears started to well up in my eyes. I immediately had all of the worst thoughts racing through my mind.
What would happen to my unborn child? How would my family take this news? And what the heck do I say to my boss who won’t stop looking at me??
“Amber? Can you set a time to come in for further testing?"
“Uhm, yeah - yes, of course. But I’ll need to call you back.”
In shock, I hung up the phone, turned and headed straight for the bathroom.
It took less than two minutes to be hunted down by a coworker my boss had sent in to tell me that I needed to get back to my desk since it wasn’t my breaktime.
The stress of my life had literally started to make me sick, and I knew I needed to do something about it.
As a soon to be mother, all I desired was to be healthy for my child, make certain my child was healthy and be sure that he had the best possible start to life. I had to take action.
This set me on a mission to learn everything I possibly could about the intricate puzzle that it is to be human, including research into holistic and alternative treatments and how other cultures viewed health and healing.
In my learning journey, I discovered that my thoughts are a key part of how I heal and stay healthy.
If I was going to overcome cancer, I had to change my thoughts. If I wanted to stay healthy, I had to keep my thoughts positive more often.
But how could I do that? I was so programmed to tilt toward the negative?
That’s when I created the "Three To Be Free” method.
This method focused on reprogramming those habitual negative thoughts that were spinning around in my mind.
I had to recognize when it was happening, stop it in action, then counter it with three positive statements that I knew to be true.
The more I stopped the negative thought cycle and replaced it with three positive thoughts, the more I felt my own power to direct my life experience.
This method was a jumpstart to a huge transformation in my life and in my healing.
So what does the “Three To Be Free” method look like?
It's simple: 3 steps, 3 phrases, 3 months:
Step 1 - Recognize And Stop Your Negative Thought
Recognize negative thoughts, especially those that cycle and have become a habit - then stop them in action.
Looking negativity straight in the face and saying “no thank you” steals its power and starts to break the cycle.
Step 2 - Implement “Three To Be Free” Phrases
Meet negative thoughts with compassion and understanding, but don’t give them power over you
Confidently counter the negative thought with three positive thoughts that are grounded in truth
Why three positive statements and not two or four?
I had learned that it takes a minimum of three positive thoughts to overwrite one negative thought.
For example, if you consistently get nervous when speaking to other people and think, "I never say the right thing, why even bother?", quickly catch yourself and counter that thought with statements such as:
- "My words flow effortlessly when spoken from my heart with authenticity and connection."
- "My unique sense of humor brings joy to those around me, fostering connection and camaraderie."
- "I embrace silence as a powerful expression of presence, transcending the need for constant validation.”
By immediately countering my negative thoughts with three genuine positive ones, I was rewiring my brain and reprogramming my thoughts.
Step 3 - Embrace Consistency
Committed to the "Three To Be Free” method for at least 3 months in order to break the habit
I started to catch my negative self-talk and redirected it with positive statements.
After a few short days I could feel the impact.
After a few weeks, I felt more empowered than ever.
When two months had passed, my thoughts were more positive than negative on a daily basis and I knew that I was going to make it through my battle with cancer.
Now, after several years of using the "Three To Be Free” method, my life has transformed in ways I never thought possible.
I’d love to say that I went into remission at the end of those two months and never had to think about cancer again, but life has a funny way of bringing lessons back for us again and again.
Though I have had a few more run-ins with cancer, each time has been a shorter fight and I’m proud to say that I’ve kicked it’s butt each time we’ve met - with the help of this method.
I found so much benefit from the “Three To Be Free” method that I started sharing it with clients, who have also found great success using it in their daily lives.
That is why I wanted to share it with you!
As you use it, I’d love for you to share your experience with me.
